A Statement from the Managing Director: Clarity on Formulation Identity
At Probiotic.co.uk our job is to make sure UK and Irish customers can identify and get hold of one specific 8-strain formulation, the De Simone Formulation, developed by Professor Claudio De Simone. Changes to branding since 2016 have made that harder than it should be, so here is the position in plain terms, sourced.
The Official Clinical Position:
- What ECCO stated. In October 2023 the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation published an official statement clarifying that the De Simone Formulation was sold under the VSL#3 brand until 2016, and that after 2016 "the VSL#3® product no longer contains DSF". ECCO states that the VSL#3 references in its 2017 guidelines should be read as relating to the De Simone Formulation. Read the ECCO statement in full.
- What the AGA guideline says. The American Gastroenterological Association's 2024 clinical practice guideline on pouchitis (Barnes et al., Gastroenterology 2024;166(1):59-85, PMID 38128971) identifies the De Simone Formulation by name as the probiotic used in the trials it reviewed. The research literature on this formulation is extensive and we publish the reference list rather than summarising it. CDS22-formula is a food supplement, not a medicine, and no health claim is made for it here.

The eight strains are identified on the current UK label by their NCIMB deposit codes, NCIMB 30435 to NCIMB 30442. CFU count describes the number of live bacteria per serving. The 8-Strain De Simone Formulation
The formulation was developed by Professor Claudio De Simone and is referred to in the published scientific literature as the De Simone Formulation. EOS2021 S.r.l. states that CDS22-formula contains the De Simone Formulation. That is a manufacturer statement and Probiotic.co.uk has not independently verified it.
The formulation has been the subject of more than 200 scientific publications, including more than 80 clinical studies. Published research relates to the formulation as studied. It is not a claim about what any retail product does.
